The Boston Celtics have signed Marcus Smart to a four-year, $77.1 million contract extension, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. The fan-favorite combo guard will now be in Boston for the next five seasons.

The extension, which will average out to around $19.25 per season, comes after a stressful offseason for both him and Celtics fans. There were a lot of rumors that the C’s were looking to trade him. Despite this, there was nothing but praise thrown his way from the mouths of Brad Stevens and Ime Udoka.

Earlier this offseason, Udoka said that he sees Smart as a “foundational piece” of the Celtics. On top of that, he also said that Smart asked to have the ball in his hands more in recent weeks, and Udoka plans to let that happen. As of now, Smart is projected to be the team’s starting point guard.

Smart celebrated the release of the news by posting to his Twitter and Instagram. On Twitter, he posted seven clover emojis, along with a plus sign, followed by four more clovers. Each one represents one season he spent or will spend in Boston. For Instagram, he posted a video commemorating his time with the C’s.

The Celtics are seeming committed to keeping Smart around, but things could get dicey next offseason. As the team gets ready to make a run at Bradley Beal, they have to make sure to keep the books clear. Hopefully, there will be a way to do that while also keeping Smart around.

For now, though, it seems as though Smart is going to be in Boston for a little while longer.
